The presence of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical products in water for human consumption is a topic that has aroused the interest of the scientific community, considering them as emerging contaminants. In Mexico, no investigation has focused on determining a large number of drugs in tap water and in drinking water of commercial brands, therefore, this investigation included the determination of 12 different antibiotics:amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim and 4 drugs cyproterone, tamoxifen, flutamine, and spironolactone in water directly from the tap and from purified drinking water of commercial brands using high performance liquid chromatography technique coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The results show the presence of all the aforementioned antibiotics, except cefotaxime, cefuroxime and trimethoprim, in the tap water of the sampled areas, whose concentrations have been considered by various investigations as risky for human health. In the commercial water samples, it was found that the Ciel brand had concentrations of 176.8 and 466.8 µg/L of amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin, respectively, with a similar result only for the Santorini brand with 418.2 µg/L with ciprofloxacin In the Bonafont brand, concentrations of <10 µg/L of medication were determined, with sulfamethoxazole being the most prevalent. Although the concentrations found in drinking water in most cases were very low, it is extremely important to continue with research focused on this topic that helps improve the quality of water in the population and therefore reduce the risk involved. the constant contact of drugs to human health and ecosystems.
